TSMC Launches Training the Trainer Program to Foster Talent from High School
TSMC is actively engaged in cultivating future technology talent and has launched a mini course, Semiconductor in Our Life, for high school students. The mini course aims to spark students’ interest in STEM and encourage them to explore their innovation potential. To ensure the course quality, TSMC launched a Training the Trainer Program to empower high school teachers through a four-stage training, which includes teaching observation, the best teaching methods, trial lesson and certification, and formal teaching. The in-person training workshop helps high school teachers master the knowledge about semiconductors and be familiar with related industry applications. After the training, these high school teachers will learn the best teaching methods that can effectively help students increase their knowledge and enthusiasm in STEM. As of December 2023, in total 27 teachers from 12 schools have completed the training and obtained the certification. Many of these teachers have offered the mini course in their schools, contributing to the semiconductor industry talent cultivation.
A Four-stage Training the Trainer Program Offers In-person and Online Workshops to Improve Teaching Quality
To ensure the school teaching quality and accuracy, TSMC invited professors in Physics and EE Departments to lead the workshop and train the high school teachers. Based on their profound experience and knowledge in semiconductors, these professors shared their teaching skills and contents, helping those high school teachers to gain a deeper lever of understanding about semiconductors and physics. Those teachers, also called seeded trainers, were encouraged to teach a trial lesson of the mini course, and the professors would provide their advice and feedback about their teaching and decide if they were qualified. After going back to their schools, the seeded trainers would open the mini course and formally teach what they learned. After class, the teachers will be able to receive the students’ feedback to help them optimize their strategies and teach more effectively. TSMC also developed an online learning community for those teachers to share teaching experience, resources, and skills with each other.
The mini course teacher training provided by TSMC made me able to help my students learn semiconductor its related applications in an easy and interesting way , and to inspire their interest in scientific research.
Talent development is one of TSMC’s five ESG directions. The Company continues to promote the "Semiconductor in Our Life" mini-courses and training more teachers to join the teaching team and will make its online learning platform, the Semiconductor Cloud Academy available to more users by adding English, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese language options, so more students from different countries can learn about the semiconductor knowledge. This will help expand science education across different regions and cultivate a more diverse pool of future talent for the global technology industry.
