TSMC's Promotion Program for Personal Protective Equipment in Diverse Sizes Benefits Over 30,000 People
TSMC actively promotes a people-oriented and friendly workplace. As the number of employees and on-site contractors continues to grow. TSMC remains committed to ensuring workplace safety by enabling every worker to select appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to minimize injury risks. To advance this mission, TSMC proactively launched a collaboration between business, government, and academia to launch the "PPE in Diverse Sizes Promotion Program." As part of this initiative, TSMC supported Taiwan's Occupational Safety and Health Administration in establishing the "Guidelines for Selecting Personal Skin Protection Equipment for Chemical Hazards." Additionally, TSMC worked with suppliers to introduce and develop a wide range of PPE sizes for workers at TSMC fabs. As of May 2025, TSMC had introduced eight categories totaling 25 types of compliant PPE, benefiting 30,459 people. In addition, TSMC is further extending its influence, collaborating with experts in industry, government, and universities to develop diverse PPE tailored to the physique of Asians. The project has already completed the development of five designs for chemical protective clothing, aiming to enhance safety and comfort for even more workers in the future, setting a new benchmark for workplace safety.
Three Key Stages: Cross-border Cooperation to Innovate New Concepts in Protective Equipment
In the past, official regulations did not clearly define selection standards for chemical personal protective equipment, and existing products on the market were largely designed with Western physiques and male workers as the baseline. This made it challenging to meet the needs of workers with varying body types. To reduce the safety risks caused by ill-fitting protective equipment, TSMC launched the "PPE in Diverse Sizes Promotion Program" in 2022. The initiative encompassed three core phases: (1) establishing official regulations, (2) introducing and developing multi-sized protective equipment within TSMC, and (3) creating protective equipment tailored to Asian physiques. TSMC collaborated with Taiwan's Occupational Safety and Health Administration to integrate personal protective equipment management requirements into official regulations. By surveying 12,455 workers, researchers sought to gain deeper insights into their usage and fitting needs at TSMC. As part of the initiative, TSMC prioritized the introduction of adjustable head protection equipment and smaller-sized torso protective clothing. Additionally, TSMC partnered with 17 suppliers to jointly develop protective equipment for hands and feet in a wide variety of sizes, resulting in five categories with 20 types of diverse options. These efforts provide workers with greater flexibility and improved accessibility in selecting and obtaining personal protective equipment that better suits their individual needs.
To expand the scope of benefits, TSMC continued its collaborative efforts in 2024 with the Institute of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health, as well as Fu Jen Catholic University and Chang Jung Christian University. By leveraging the anthropometric database and Asian apparel sizing standards, the team designed chemical protective clothing that better fits the body shapes of Asian workers. During the research process, 1,369 workers from various industries were invited to participate in surveys and wearable tests. This effort enabled the precise definition of ten critical skeletal movement measurements and the establishment of five gender-based size categories. The results will serve as the reference for domestic manufacturers of protective clothing, ensuring enhanced safety and health protection for workers across industries.
Wearing small-sized chemical protective clothing makes me feel safer while working. I won't have my movements disrupted by overly long sleeves or pant legs, making actions smoother and more natural.
Small-sized chemical protective gloves effectively enhance operational flexibility and precision. They fit comfortably and snugly, significantly improving work efficiency.
TSMC is dedicated to achieving its vision of zero accidents and actively collaborates with experts, suppliers, and contractors to create a positive cycle of improvement in the workplace. TSMC continues to share its commitment and achievements in developing multi-size protective equipment at domestic and international academic seminars and protective equipment exhibitions. Looking ahead, TSMC plans to evaluate the possibility of promoting these efforts to overseas subsidiaries and other Asian countries, benefiting more workers and fulfilling its commitment to the "Safety and Health Policy ."
