TSMC Launches “Eco Plus! Ecological Harmony Program” to Foster Green Sustainability

TSMC launches the "Eco Plus! Ecological Harmony Program" to enhance biodiversity protection.
TSMC collaborates with industry, government, academia, and research partners to promote cross-domain cooperation.
Welcome remarks by Lora Ho, TSMC Senior Vice President and ESG Committee Chairperson, at the launch ceremony.
TSMC shares the ecological restoration achievements of TSMC's fabs and shares "Honey TSMC" with partners.

TSMC is committed to creating a balance between technology and ecology and strives to foster environmental sustainability. To maintain the sustainability of ecosystem and deepen biodiversity conservation, TSMC has partnered with the Taiwan Biodiversity Research Institute of Ministry of Agriculture, Taiwan Wild Bird Federation, and Observer Ecological Consultant Co., Ltd. to launch the "Eco Plus! Ecological Harmony Program" on International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22, 2024. The program focuses on three aspects-habitat, species, and knowledge, and facilitates seven actions for biodiversity conservation and promotion. It is expected to complete the construction of one ecological corridor, the management of two Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECMs), the conservation of six endangered species by 2030. In addition, 96 potential talents and 36 important ecological research projects will be supported through the biodiversity awards. Alongside efforts to promote the eBird Taiwan database and iNaturalist, fostering citizen science participation to implement the "Biodiversity Statement" of TSMC.

TSMC is excited to take the responsibility of spearheading the call to action and integrating resources between industry, government, academia, and research partners. On International Day for Biological Diversity, we announced the launch of the ‘Eco Plus! Ecological Harmony Program,’ hoping to encourage the entire industry supply chain to take action.

Starting from the Taichung Site, Strengthen Biodiversity Conservation

Considering the ecological impacts caused by extreme weather, TSMC has adopted six strategies of the "Biodiversity Statement" as guiding principles and established a biodiversity taskforce. The Company conducted comprehensive analysis of the relationship between the geographic location of its fabs, legally designated ecologically sensitive areas, and other ecological conservation priority areas, evaluating the ecological impacts and conservation potential, and chose the fabs in Taichung, which are adjacent to Dadu Plateau, farmland, and the Fazi River, to pilot the program. In collaboration with local government, industry, academia, and communities, the "Eco Plus! Ecological Harmony Program" will enhance habitat and species conservation, protect low-elevation mountain areas to optimize habitat conditions, and enhance species survival. During the launch ceremony, TSMC also disclosed the successful rehabilitation of bees in collaboration with local beekeepers and Donghai University based on the close-to-nature forest at Taichung fab. This achievement was shared with various partners under the name "Honey TSMC" and used as a great start for the Company's biodiversity program. Moreover, the program establishes biodiversity awards to encourage ecological talent, promotes citizen science through the "eBird Taiwan" database and "iNaturalist," and optimize ecological data identification technology to connect people and society. By enhancing public awareness of biodiversity, the program aims to facilitate biodiversity mainstreaming and promote Nature Positive.

We are committed to promoting the biodiversity mainstreaming and hope to achieve harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. We are delighted to share the same goal with TSMC and look forward to working together in this program to make efforts for ecology.

Jia-Dong YangDirector of Taiwan Biodiversity Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture

Bird habitats are closely related to human life. We have promoted the "eBird Taiwan" database and then developed the "Merlin App" birdsong recognition tool. It is very exciting that TSMC has joined us to encourage more people who love nature to pay attention to the ecological environment.

Jin-Lin ChangPresident of Taiwan Wild Bird Federation

In response to the Taiwan Ecological Network Program, more environmentally friendly measures are needed in the low-elevation mountain areas. TSMC's investment in the protection of these areas is expected to inspire more actions and achieve conservation results greater than the sum of its parts.

Birds are important environmental indicators and serve as a medium that connects human with nature. Through collaboration with TSMC, we will use crowdsourcing and AI monitoring to construct a comprehensive map of Taiwan's birds, accelerating the establishment of the biological database.

Ruey-Shing LinResearcher and Chief of Taiwan Biodiversity Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture

Advancements in semiconductors have driven the growth of open source and open data, becoming a significant force in promoting citizen science. TSMC's initiative aims to introduce more people to iNaturalist, fostering biodiversity education for all ages.

Dr. Cheng-Tao LinAssociate Professor, School of Forestry and Resource Conservation, National Taiwan University

In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Goal 15, "protect and restore sustainable use of ecosystems, ensure biodiversity," TSMC is committed to implementing its Ecological Harmony Program and expanding participation from more stakeholders to promote the implementation of SDGs Goal 17, "strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development," and to enhance biodiversity conservation and boost environmental sustainability.
